How To Play: Unreal + Unreal Tournament (OldUnreal)

guides · Unreal Tournament 2004 · Mar 4, 2026
This is a short guide to get Unreal (1998), Unreal Tournament (1999) and Unreal Tournament (2004) working and patched to play with others online. Unlike my previous guide on older Call of Duty games, this is much simpler and straight forward. Step 1: Head over to https://oldunreal.com. You'll land on the main page. Step 2: Under "Full Game Installers", press on any of 3 games you wish to download. You do not need to interact with the manual game patches under "Game Patches" at all. Step 3: Once you are on the page of the game you wish to install, click the green text corresponding to the game("Unreal_Gold.exe" for Unreal 1998, "UT_GOTY.exe" for Unreal Tournament 1999 or "UT2004.exe" for Unreal Tournament 2004). It should install. Step 4: Open the installer and go through it. After you've done that, it should open the installation script that will install the game and automatically patch it to the latest OldUnreal version. Step 5: Once you've installed the game, it should open the folder in which it's located in. You can now open and play the game (for example, Unreal Tournament 2004's exe is UT2004.exe). In the case of Unreal Tournament 2004, you will go to Join Game (if you want to play online), set your name (netspeed is irrelevant, it's 2026) and go to the Internet tab and join any server you want. And with these simple 5 steps, you should be able to play any of three Unreal games you want online. Lastly, I've made an unofficial Discord community centered around GameDate that you can join. We're very small right now, but we're hoping to see new people join us :) https://discord.gg/YnzX5Jhc9N
