Natural Selection 2 Community

I was about to buy this game because it is on sale for 75% off on steam right now, but I looked at some of the reviews and I am very skeptical. The big thing is that a lot of reviews are saying that the games community is horribly toxic towards new players. One review even says that there are people doxxing people that are "suspected smurfs" or cheaters and a some weird backdoor mod stuff, and that review has almost 200 people said its helpful. I am not even sure what to think on this so if you have more insight into this messed up community I would be glad to hear what you have to say.
