Classic Multiplayer Doom - Odamex
guides · Doom · Mar 15, 2026
Odamex is a free modification of the Doom engine that allows players to connect together easily. The goal of Odamex is to add enhancements to Doom while still retaining that "classic Doom feel" we all know and love about the original game. Odamex is available on Windows 10 and 11, as well as Linux and MacOS.
Odamex has a client/server architecture with a launcher that allows players to come and go freely into servers without having to restart a game. A list of supported editing features and game modes can be found here:

A guide for installing Odamex can be found on their project wiki:

The gist of it is that if you already own Doom via DOS, Doom95, Steam, or GOG, you already own everything needed to run Odamex. Odamex will automatically find your Steam and GOG installs of Doom so no more setup is needed beyond installing Odamex. If you own Doom via CD, you'll need to locate and copy DOOM2.WAD and put it in the same folder as odamex.exe (or put it in /.odamex on Linux and MacOS). After that, Odamex will run fine. Run Odamex (gold logo icon) to set up your name and controls. After that, quit Odamex and run Odalaunch (red and blue icon) or ODX to see a list of servers and join games. You may need to tell Odalaunch where your Odamex is the first time you run it, just point it to the folder Odamex is in.
